The term “seeing the sights” seems like it was invented for Times Square. No sight is seen more than the illuminated crystal ball that descends down a pole from the building One Times Square at the crossroad’s southern terminus. And Times Square is a crossroads, the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue that stretches from Forty-Second Street to Forty-Seventh. Right in the center you can find the statue of George M. Cohan, the composer and performer who wrote “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “Over There,” and “Give My Regards to Broadway,” and was played by James Cagney in the Michael Curtiz biopic Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942).
